The two flag carriers, both members of the Star Alliance, will expand their existing codeshare throughout the next six months. According to the official press release, it is the first joint venture agreement ever signed between a Chinese and North American airline. The two companies expanded a code-sharing agreement on May 5, 2018.

"China is a growing market for Air Canada. In the last two years, Air China has launched flights directly linking Beijing with Montreal, and Air Canada has launched new non-stop flights between Montreal and Shanghai to meet growth in demand.

The two carriers now operate up to a total of 52 trans-Pacific flights per week between Canada and China from Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal to and from Beijing and Shanghai.

In accordance with a request from the Chinese Civil Aviation Administration, Air Canada now lists Taiwan as part of China, despite the Canadian government's disapproval.
