Emirates enforces new “powder” ban

Emirates Airlines informed its passengers that from June 30, 2018, new baggage restrictions would be applied for specific destinations. Those flying from or via Australia and New Zealand or from, via or to the USA should now give up any “powder-like substance” over a certain quantity.

Any powder with the exception of baby formula, prescription medicine, coffee and human remains will now be forbidden in carry-on and cabin luggage if the quantity of substance is over 350 milliliters or 350 grams. The same limitation applies to the capacity of the container which cannot be over 350 milliliters.

This decision follows new directives from the US Transport Security Administration (TSA), the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs and the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand.

The change was expected by experts, as it follows the recent terror plot that was intercepted in Sydney: on July 15, 2017, two brothers tried to detonate a military-grade improvised device and a chemical dispersion device in an Etihad flight from Sydney to Abu Dhabi. The second device which, was found unassembled, used powdery substances to create hydrogen sulphide, a colourless, flammable and extremely toxic gas.
