Aspiring to be the best

Swissport has opened an  Aspire business lounge at Cork Airport, which it says comes as a direct response to a significant increase in demand from business traverllers across the south of Ireland.

The new lounge, which has the capacity for upwards of 80 guests, is open to all travellers, irrespective of airline or class of travel, and is the 31st Aspire Lounge to open globally.

The new space is also accessible to Priority Pass, Diners Club and DragonPass cardholders, along with guests of certain airlines.

Talking about the new facility, Cork Airports managing director, Niall MacCarthy, says: This gives everyone travelling through the airport, whether its for business or leisure, the chance to relax or work in comfort, and enjoy some great food and drink sourced from our region.

More than 2.4 million passengers will travel through Cork Airport this year and it is important for us to be able to provide the best possible customer service, giving all our guests the opportunity for a productive and first class start to their journey every time.

Shaun Weston, vice president of global lounges, Swissport, stated: This new showcase lounge is now one of 31 Aspire lounges located in airports around the globe, including Amsterdam Schiphol, London Heathrow, Calgary and Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta airports.

SSP wins major F&B contract at Bahrain Airport

SSP has reached an agreement with Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) to operate 17 units in Bahrain International Airports new passenger terminal, in partnership with leading Bahraini business conglomerate, the Buhindi Group.

 The units will feature a strong mix of key local and international F&B brands including Bahrains first TGI Fridays and Jamies Deli and Pizzeria from world-renowned chef Jamie Oliver. Among this impressive brand line-up will also be an illy caffè, Burger King, KFC, Camden food co, Millies Cookies, Italian brand Levito and a Ritazza in a new food court area.

The new development is part of the airports USD 1.1 billion modernisation programme, which will see the creation of a new terminal.

FLEET of the future?

Vanderlandes flexible baggage logistics solution FLEET has received a Red Dot: Best of the Best award, the top distinction at the recent Red Dot design competition. The event credits the best products manufactured each year with the Best of the Best award reserved for designs that the panel of experts deem to be of a superior quality. Only 1% of entries receive this recognition.

By utilising intelligent autonomous vehicle technology, FLEET replaces the need for fixed conveyors and sorting systems. Each individual vehicle carries a single bag and determines the most optimal route through an airport.

Vanderlande claims that this not only helps to future-proof baggage logistics but provides more flexibility and space efficiency and will enable airports to adapt to a fast-changing world. In addition, FLEET consumes up to 50% less energy compared to traditional baggage handling systems.

And in the unlikely event that a vehicle fails to operate, others can manoeuvre around it, which means that only one bag will be affected and guarantees operational certainty. Put simply, this accolade is an exciting confirmation that Vanderlande is on the right path with FLEET, says Vanderlandes executive vice president for airports and member of the board, Andrew Manship.

It is also testament to the hard work and creativity of everyone involved with the solution. While its sleek design is a crucial factor, the award also indicates that the industry is receptive to the total concept of the solution. That is, the seamless combination of system, software and service. 

Edinburgh Airport invests in new forecasting solution

Edinburgh Airport (EDI) is to introduce Copenhagen Optimizations cloud-based Better Forecast platform to improve the accuracy of passenger forecasts and reduce the time spent on forecasting.

The solution has already been successfully implemented at a gateways such as Toronto Pearson, Geneva, Bologna, Dublin and London Luton, with the UK airport experiencing a 25% reduction in wait times and a forecast accuracy of 96.7%.

Zoë Todd, Edinburghs head of integrated business planning, said: This new forecasting solution will allow us to meet an increasing demand for more dynamic, timely and accurate security forecasting.

Working with CopOpt [Copenhagen Optimization] we have reduced the time taken to produce the security forecast, demonstrated an improvement in forecast accuracy and have found an intuitive product that more than fits the needs of our business planning team.

EDI is the busiest airport in Scotland and one of the fastest growing airports in the UK with more than 10% growth per annum in recent years and believes that the solution will help it as it strives to be even more efficient.

It selected Better Forecast through a competitive process where three different forecast solutions where trialled in a head-to-head competition.

Anders Dohn, CopOpts managing partner, said: We enjoyed the head-to-head competition and were pleased to see how the EDI forecasting team were setting high standards for the forecasting process as well as for the accuracy of the forecast. The machine learning elements included in Better Forecast proved successful and significantly reduced the time required to make a forecast while securing a high accuracy.
