HONG KONG"S SKY BRIDGE TAKING SHAPE AHEAD OF 2020 OPENING

Hong Kong International Airport's new 200 metre long pedestrian bridge between Terminal 1 and the North Satellite Concourse is a step closer to reality this morning as its main prefabricated section is in place after arriving by ship from China.

Being billed as the world’s longest airside bridge, Sky Bridge is also close to 30 metres high allowing aircraft up to the size of the A380 to pass underneath it.

Airport operator, Airport Authority Hong Kong, says that its construction will minimise travelling times between the two buildings for passengers by avoiding the need to use shuttle buses.

It is also expected to provide users with great views of the apron, further enhancing passengers’ airport experience.

To minimise impact on HKIA’s busy operations, Sky Bridge was prefabricated in Zhongshan. 

Three precast segments were transported to the assembly yard in the midfield area of HKIA from September to October 2019. The segments were then assembled to form the main structure of the bridge. 

The main structure of the bridge, weighing over 5,000 tonnes, was transported over 3km on HKIA’s apron from the assembly yard to the bridge’s final position. It was then erected on the bridge towers.

AAHK's executive director of engineering and technology, Ricky Leung, enthuses: “We are pleased with the successful delivery of Sky Bridge’s main structure, which concludes the prefabrication phase of its construction on schedule. 

"This also marks the first time HKIA has transported such a mega structure within the apron area.

“Employing great skill and techniques, the project team transported the gigantic structure by sea and along the apron. 

"I must thank the project team, the participating teams at the AA and all the other parties who contributed to such an efficient delivery, while maintaining smooth operations of the airport."

With the main structure of SkyBridge in place, facilities installation and renovation works will begin. SkyBridge is expected to commence operation in mid-2020.

The air-conditioned footbridge will boast its own restaurant and bar and provide spectacular views of the airport. 

Talking exclusively to Airport World about Sky Bridge last year, AAHK CEO, Fred Lam, said: "We spare no expense in enhancing efficiency and improving the passenger experience. 

"I believe Sky Bridge will be unique and something really special as well as being good for the environment.”
