GoAir Airbus A320neo rejects takeoff after engine catches fire

A GoAir Airbus A320neo had to abort takeoff at Ahmedabad airport, India, after its right engine caught fire. The malfunction is suspected to be due to a foreign object, possibly a bird strike.

The aircraft, registered VT-WGY, was about to carry out flight G8802 from Ahmedabad International Airport (AMD) to Bengaluru International Airport (BLR). During its take-off roll, a fire was detected in engine #2.

“The right engine of GoAir flight G8 802 is suspected to have suffered from a foreign object damage (FOD) while on take-off roll,” a spokesperson for GoAir said in a statement, adding “the suspected FOD resulted in a small fire which has been doused.”

The aircraft was towed away from the runway, after which all passengers and crew were evacuated normally. The exact number of passengers is unknown. Another plane was used to carry the passengers to their final destination. 

“The airline sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused to its passengers,” the statement concludes.

As a result of the runway being encumbered, several other domestic flights at Ahmedabad airport were delayed. 

On November 11, 2010, an Airbus A320 operated by the Indian low-cost carrier veered off the runway while landing in heavy rains at Bengaluru Airport, India. The flight crew decided to do a go-around from the grass patch for a second landing attempt before being diverted to another airport.
