Sofia Airport concession ratified by Bulgaria’s Supreme Administrative Court

The Supreme Administrative Court of Bulgaria has ended almost a year of legal wrangling by confirming that Meridiam and its partner, Munich Airport subsidiary Munich Airport International (MAI), has won the concession to operate and development Sofia Airport.

The companies make up the SOF Connect consortium awarded the concession by Bulgaria’s Ministry of Transport in July 2019, but the decision was contested by the defeated bidders and it has taken nearly 12 months to ratify the deal.

Munich Airports announced today that the Supreme Administrative Court of Bulgaria had upheld November 2019’s decision by the Commission for Protection of Competition to confirm the selection of Meridiam and MAI as the concessionaire for Sofia Airport.

According to Munich Airport, the investment embedded in this 35-year long-term public-private partnership will “contribute to Bulgaria´s economic rebound post COVID-19 crisis and support the Bulgarian government and local authorities to achieve significant regional benefits in social, economic and environmental aspects”.

It adds that the airport will develop new environmental standards, including joining ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme, that will “serve as benchmark for other airports and industries aiming at becoming an enabler of social, economic, environmental and inclusive growth that contributes to Sofia and Bulgaria”.
