ACI World appoints new operations and safety expert to succeed retiring David Gamper

ACI World has today announced that Thomas Romig, currently head of operations control and development at Geneva Airport, will succeed ACI stalwart David Gamper as director of safety, operations and technical affairs.

Gamper’s retirement will mark the end of an era for ACI World as he has been with the organisation since 1992. For Romig, it marks a return to ACI as he served as manager, safety, IT and cargo in Gamper’s team between 2003 and 2008.

Romig joined Geneva Airport after leaving ACI World, and in 2013 moved into various operational roles including being in charge of airside operations and then the development of the airport’s state of the art Airport Operations Centre (APOC).

Since 2018, he has managed Geneva Airport’s day-to-day operational activities as well as the operational aspects of the airport’s future development as head of operations control and development. Throughout his time at Geneva Airport, Romig has stayed very active within ACI in particular through leading various committees and task forces.

“For almost as long as ACI has been in existence, David Gamper has served our members in the safety and technical affairs portfolio with diligence, distinction and significant success,” said ACI World director general, Luis Felipe de Oliveira said.

“ACI World is constantly active in the field of standards and procedures for safe airport operations and David has amplified our voice on the global stage ensuring that members interests are understood and heard as global standards and practices are formulated.

“I thank David for his contribution and wish him a prosperous and enjoyable retirement. I also welcome Thomas Romig back to the ACI family and look forward to him taking this vital area forward. We are lucky to be able to announce this succession and I am sure it will be a successful one for us, our members and our partners.”

Typically modest Gamper chose to highlight the qualities and skills of Romig in his farewell message, rather than reflect on his own achievements at ACI World, initially in Geneva and then Montréal when the organisation’s headquarters moved there in 2011.

He said: “I am delighted to hand over the reins to Thomas who I know will serve ACI with distinction – he already did so at the start of his career.

“He has been chair of the ACI-Europe Technical and Operational Safety committee and has served on ACI’s Safety and Technical committee where he has done sterling work to advance ACI positions in many areas such as airspace management, ground handling, drones, and procedures for aerodromes – all whilst holding down a demanding position at Geneva Airport.

“All these positions need to be continually advanced and I know that Thomas will do that.”

Romig said: “After 12 years of airport operations, I look forward to returning to ACI and pursuing the great work that David and the entire team have carried forward over the years.

“Applying real world experience in the development of future regulation, supporting ICAO and other industry stakeholders in their important endeavours to improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the industry, and advocating ACI’s policies on behalf of airport members, have been activities that have always been close to my heart, through my previous experience with ACI and in the intervening years.

“Joining the team in Montréal to further the support ACI provides to its members will be a great honour, challenge and source of motivation.”

Thomas Romig will join ACI World on November 2.
