United Airlines adds Jordan among 5 new destinations; cuts 11 domestic services

United Airlines is adding five new transatlantic destinations for summer of 2022.

Starting November 11, 2022, passengers can book tickets for United Airlines flights from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)  and Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), with the first flight taking off on May 5, 2022.

"We're expecting next summer to be one of our busiest ever for transatlantic travel, and we know our customers have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to visit unique and memorable international destinations," Patrick Quayle, senior vice president of international network and alliances at United Airlines said in a press statement.

"We're thrilled to make it easier for more travelers to have the chance to swim in the Red Sea, visit the Wadi Rum desert and simply experience Jordan's vibrant history and culture."

"United Airlines' launch of non-stop service between Amman and Washington D.C. will further the close economic and cultural ties between Jordan and the United States," Dina Kawar, Jordan's Ambassador to the United States said.

"We look forward to many years of success, and the boost to Jordan's tourism economy this new service will bring, and we will remain committed to ensuring the success of this new route into Amman."

 United Airlines’ other new transatlantic destinations include:

  • Bergen, Norway 
  • Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain
  • Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal
  • Palma de Mallorca, Spain

In addition, United will start four new routes to European destinations including:

  • Chicago to Milan
  • Denver to Munich
  • Washington D.C.to Berlin
  • Boston to London

"United Airlines' nonstop flight from Washington, D.C to Amman will serve as an important new gateway between our nations' capitals, catering to both business and leisure passengers on the brand-new route," Carl Schultz, acting vice president of airline business development for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said. 

"We look forward to adding yet another option for our customers in the National Capital Region as we continue to diversify our growing line-up of international destinations."

In the meantime, United Airlines is dropping its services to 11 domestic operations in the US indefinitely.

Starting November 30, 2021, the airline will no longer fly to the following cities:

  • Kalamazoo/Battle Creek, Michigan
  • College Station, Texas
  • Columbia, Missouri
  • Mosinee, Wisconsin
  • Evansville, Indiana
  • Killeen–Fort Hood, Texas
  • Lansing, Michigan
  • Monroe, Louisiana
  • Pierre, South Dakota
  • Watertown, South Dakota
  • Twin Falls, Idaho

United Airlines told local media that, "Many different factors determine a successful route and our decisions include careful evaluation of our overall network, fleet, resources at our regional partners, and yields." 

"With that in mind, we have determined that these particular routes are not sustainable for the long-term."
