Turin Airport to trial new AI equipped personal mobility devices

Turin-Caselle Airport (TRN) in Italy has begun trials of a new personal mobility devices for passengers with reduced mobility.

Ongoing trials are aimed at testing the SEDIA (SEat Designed for Intelligent Autonomy) wheelchair, an innovative device with autonomous driving and voice commands.

It has been developed by start-up Alba Robot as part of Torino City Lab, an innovation laboratory of the City of Turin in which the airport is a partner.

The trials are the first in Italy to take place in a real operating environment that involve a personal mobility device equipped with Artificial Intelligence.

According to the airport, as well as benefiting those with reduced mobility, the innovative solution will also potentially free up more time for staff to provide support for a greater number of passengers.

SEDIA’s autonomous driving system on predefined maps allows the vehicles to autonomously relocate to the predefined service bays once the assistance is over, optimising the management of the fleet.
