ICAO: Focus on recovery and sustainability in Malaysia

As part of his recent visit to Kuala Lumpur, ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano met with the Minister of Transport of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong (right) during which both Officials reviewed significant objectives and challenges for a sustainable and resilient recovery for international civil aviation, and identified common priorities as countries reopen their international borders. 

Attending the bilateral meeting for Malaysia was the Ministry’s Deputy Secretary General (Policy), Ms. Normah Osman; the CEO of the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) Datuk Capt. Chester Voo; Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to ICAO, Ms. Flora Chin Lee Sa; and Chief Operation Officer of the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM), YM. Raja Azmi bin Raja Nazuddin.

Mr. Sciacchitano thanked the Government of Malaysia for the continuous support and contributions to ICAO, especially with regard to the secondment of staff. 

The President also appealed to the Government of Malaysia for the support of a Long Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG) for international civil aviation CO2 emissions reduction, and encouraged Malaysia to participate in the High-Level Meeting on the LTAG in late July.

Throughout the two-day mission, which began on 19 May 2022, Mr. Sciacchitano was accompanied by Mr. Ma Tao, ICAO’s Regional Director for the Asia Pacific region. 

Other activities included visits to the Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Control Centre (KLATCC), where Mr.  Sciacchitano was welcomed by the CEO of the CAAM, Datuk Capt. Chester Voo; the Deputy CEO of the CAAM, Mr. Zainal Abidin Maslan; and Capt. Md. Jani Md. Dom, CAAM Director of Quality and Standards; and to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), where the President was greeted by the Managing Director of the Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (MAHB), Dato Iskandar Mizal Mahmood.

A meeting with Petronas Dagangan Berhad also provided the President with an opportunity to share some of ICAO's environmental initiatives, particularly its work  on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
