Endeavor CRJ9"s Wing Hits La Guardia Runway During Landing

An otherwise uneventful Endeavor Air CRJ-900 flight on Saturday had a heart-stopping finale with a runway wing strike incident on landing.

On Saturday afternoon, an Endeavor Air jet operating a Delta Air Lines flight clipped its wing on the runway surface at New York's La Guardia Airport. The incident occurred as the jet was concluding a flight from Cleveland, Ohio, causing minor damage to the plane, and putting it out of service for almost two days. No injuries were reported.

CRJ-900 wing strike incident at La Guardia

According to The Aviation Herald, the Bombardier CRJ-900 (registration N146PQ) belonging to Minneapolis-headquartered Endeavor Air was operating flight DL5239 on Saturday, July 30, when the wing strike happened. DL5239 is the mid-afternoon departure out of Cleveland Hopkins Airport (CLE) that Endeavor Air operates on behalf of Delta Air Lines. On Saturday, the flight proceeded without incident until the wing strike event upon landing at New York's La Guardia Airport (LGA). Fortunately, the jet completed the landing and taxied to the apron.

The operating aircraft, N146PQ, is a 14.8-year-old regional jet that has spent most of its working life flying under Delta colors. The Av Herald's database of incidents has the plane involved in one other significant event - a bird strike incident on approach to Detroit in 2019. The jet was able to complete the approach and land without further incident or injury to passengers or crew.

Four Endeavor Air wing strike incidents in 18 months

Endeavor Air, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, has a fleet of over 180 CRJ-900 jets (the airline is the world's largest operator of the aircraft type). Endeavor Air operates the Canadian-built planes on over 900 daily flights to around 140 destinations in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. With that activity level, you can't expect an incident-free history.

In 2021, Endeavor Air jets had three other wing strike incidents on landing. In March 2021, a CRF-900 registered as N910XJ was flying from Atlanta (ATL) to Chattanooga (CHA) when the plane's left wing tip struck the runway surface on landing. Two months later, in May, another CRJ-900 (registration N8928) was operating a flight from Toronto (YYZ) to Detroit (DTW) when its right wing tip struck the runway on landing.

On Boxing Day 2021, N8980A was flying from Detroit to Kalamazoo (AZO) when its right-hand wingtip struck the runway surface on landing. Like the incident on Saturday, the three planes could complete the landing and taxi to the apron without further problems. There has also been the expected run of minor incidents concerning smoke in the cockpit, minor engine malfunctions, and bird strikes involving Endeavor Air aircraft in the last 12 to 18 months.

The operating aircraft involved in Saturday's incident is back in the air

One of the more interesting incidents involving an Endeavor Air CRJ-900 was also one of the more recent. In January, after landing at Raleigh/Durham Airport (RDU), the operating aircraft (N272PQ) reportedly "skidded off the paved surface and became stuck within the protected area of the runway." We don't want to overdramatize the event - the jet was traveling slow enough to be attempting to exit the runway after landing. But the stuck plane did cause the runway's closure for 15 hours until it could be towed away.

Meanwhile, the CRJ-900 involved in Saturday's wing strike incident, N146PQ, is back in the air. Mid-morning on Monday, the jet returned to service, operating a flight from La Guardia to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG). On Tuesday morning, N146PQ is slated to operate a flight from CVG down to Delta's Atlanta hub.
