EU and US reach no conclusion on electronics ban

European and US regulators have decided to meet again later this month to discuss a potential expansion of a controversial ban on personal electronic devices in the cabin of flights from Middle Eastern and North African countries.

A US delegation led by deputy secretary of homeland security Elaine Duke met with the European commissioner for migration, home affairs and citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos and transport commissioner Violeta Bulc in Brussels yesterday.

In a joint statement, the two sides say that they "exchanged information on the serious evolving threats to aviation security and approaches to confronting such threats".

However, no decision about our a potential change in security measures appears to have been reached. The delegates decided to reconvene a meeting in Washington during the week of May 22-26 "to further assess shared risks and solutions for protecting airline passengers, whilst ensuring the smooth functioning of global air travel".

Airline association IATA has warned the EU and US administrations that a potential expansion of the current ban to flights from Europe will have "significantly higher negative impacts than the existing measures".
